The First Low-Profile Skid Plate System for 4WD Toyota & Lexus IFS
Patent Pending

Every 1995-2024 Toyota/Lexus 4WD IFS skid plate on the market shares the same compromise:

They must drop downward early & low to clear the bulky factory differential mounts.

That forces skid plates to:

  • Bend sharply
  • Hang lower than the frame
  • Hang in front of the frame
  • Contact obstacles sooner
  • Plow through rocks, snow, sand, and mud
  • Get beat-up from high impact frequency

For decades, this packaging limitation has dictated how every 4WD skid plate must be designed.

Until now.

With the introduction of our Heavy Duty Differential Drop System, the differential mounting geometry changes, allowing the first truly low-profile skid architecture ever designed for these platforms.

This skid system is designed around our new HD Differential Drop System, because without it, this revolutionary low-profile architecture simply isn’t possible.

The result: A 2WD Baja-style high clearance skid plate profile engineered for 4WD drivetrains.

Why This Has Never Been Done Before

Traditional skid plate designs have always been dictated by factory differential mounts, not what engineers actually wanted.

Because those mounts sit below the frame with their bulky bushings and large washers located up front, skid plates have always been forced to bend early and hang lower.

Below are real-world examples pulled from public sources. Skid plate brand identifiers have been removed.

And to be clear, this isn’t a criticism of any manufacturer. These designs were never a choice. They were a limitation.

Until now, every skid plate had to follow this same compromised geometry.

At some point, you have to ask: what’s the advantage of IFS if you’re just hanging a massive obstruction at the lowest point of the vehicle?

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the problem becomes even worse when diff drop spacers are installed–sometimes requiring drop spacer kits for skid plates themselves.

Yuck.

This is exactly what we set out to eliminate.

Our required HD Differential Drop System changes that design entirely, making a low-profile skid architecture possible for the first time.

By relocating those bushings to the differential itself and incorporating the diff drop directly into the brackets, our design eliminates the bulky frame-side mount stack altogether.

That change unlocks something that was previously impossible:

  • A straight-line skid plate profile
  • Near zero drop below the frame
  • Dramatic improvement to approach angle
  • Dramatic reduction in skid plate impacts

A 2WD Baja-style skid profile that runs straight beneath the chassis instead of dropping sharply downward.

This new packaging architecture is what makes the Marlin Crawler Ultimate Low Profile Skid Plate System possible.

Below are images that capture years of real-world testing across multiple prototype designs.

Early versions focused on achieving the lowest possible profile, even exposing portions of the front differential to maximize clearance.

That testing proved what was possible.

The production system builds on those results with a fully integrated design–combining extreme ground clearance with complete differential protection.

You’re looking at the lowest profile 4WD skid plate ever built for these frames.

Now here’s the part that doesn’t make sense: This setup is also running up to a true 1-inch axle centerline drop hidden behind the skid plate.

That’s both the largest axle drop ever achieved with the most ground clearance ever gained. No other system can do both.

What Changed?

All of this is only made possible thanks to our new HD Differential Drop System. With it installed you unlock:

  • Diff bracket bushings moved from frame to differential
  • Diff drop built-into our HD brackets (up to a TRUE 1″ axle centerline drop – an industry-first)
  • Bracket bushing + any spacer drop stack height are entirely eliminated
  • Only ½” of bracketry sits below your frame
  • Up to 158% more effective drop than any 1-inch spacer kit
  • Up to 9× less ground clearance loss compared to spacer kits
  • The ability to run this Ultimate Skid Plate that tightly grazes beneath at only a ~15° slope angle
  • Provides better geometry, axles operate in stronger range, up to +1″ more suspension down-travel
  • The underbody becomes dramatically cleaner, lighter, easier to service
  • It’s as if the differential brackets do not exist at all

This allows our skid plate to run straight from the radiator support to the axle centerline before making its first bend, even despite having the differential axle centerline lowered 2.6× more than any spacer drop kit ever made. Read our HD Diff Drop Page to see how this became possible.

This setup doesn’t just recover ground clearance. It increases it.

Why That Matters

When approaching an obstacle, the tires have not yet begun lifting the vehicle.

Clearance in front of the axle centerline is the most critical.

All other 4WD skid plates:

  1. Begin their steep downward bend 12″ or more ahead of the axle
  2. Gobble up half a foot or more of ground clearance
  3. Use an obtrusive 40° or sharper leading slope angle

They all create a plow effect that contacts rocks, sand, snow, and mud early, and beats the hell out of the skid.
Even factory skids.

The problem becomes obvious just looking at more examples.

And again, this is not a criticism of any manufacturer. All of these designs require bending early to clear bulky front differential mounts and extend far out in front of the axle. Low, exposed, and leading the vehicle into obstacles.

Instead of protecting the vehicle, they become the first point of contact.

Rather than being the first point of contact, our design is engineered to avoid it altogether:

  1. Begins its first bend way back near the axle centerline
  2. Features a tucked-up high-clearance profile that passes only ~½” below the front subframe
  3. Has a smooth ~15° slope angle
  4. Designed to avoid contact with objects altogether, or otherwise glide smoothly right over them.

That difference dramatically improves:

  • Approach Angle near the tires
  • Obstacle Clearance
  • Rock, snow, sand, mud performance
  • Only a ~15° slope compared to sharp 40+° slopes used on traditional designs
  • Far more likely to glide up & over rather than smack into objects
  • Fewer impacts to skid plate = Increased skid plate longevity

Stop plowing into objects and start gliding over them.

Below are more prototype examples of what that looks like in the real world.

At a glance, it doesn’t even look like there’s a skid plate installed.

That’s not an illusion. That’s what happens when a skid plate is designed to avoid obstacles entirely.

Tucked tight to the frame, this system all but disappears, while still delivering full protection underneath.

And somehow, it does all this despite having up to a TRUE 1″ axle centerline drop.

No plow. No bulk. No visual footprint.

And yet: Stronger diff mounts, more suspension travel, increased CV strength, longer CV boot life, and even marginally improved fuel efficiency.

Something no other system has ever come close to achieving.

And this isn’t just for show. It’s been proven under real abuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have to also run the new Marlin Crawler HD Diff Drop Kit? For 4WD applications, Yes. This revolutionary low profile packaging is only made possible thanks to the new patent-pending differential bracket geometry from our HD Diff Drop Kit. It is what unlocks this amazing setup in the first place. For 2WD applications, No. You can slap this low profile skid onto a 2WD chassis as-is.
  2. Compatible with LCA Frame Pivot Kit? No. Because ~2″ thick of material has been welded below your subframe, your vehicle requires, in comparison, a very low-hanging and obtrusive proprietary skid plate and is unfortunately not compatible with our Ultimate Low Profile Skid Plate. For more info, please see: What You’d Need to Buy Without RCLT HD > 5. LCA Pivot Kit (+1″ Forward). It should be, however, compatible with our new HD Diff Drop System.
  3. Compatible with Frame Drop Bracket Kits? No. While our new Low Profile HD Diff Drop Brackets are likely compatible, because frame drop kits do the exact opposite of what you want with IFS, which is nullify ground clearance, “low profile” is no longer among your vehicle’s vernacular.
  4. Any frame modifications? Yes. Tacoma owners will need to cut-off and remove their front center jack point (the point that is between your current forward diff mounts) and all users will need to either (A) hammer and bend upward the two front bracket mounts or (B) cut both off. Full details will be in our upcoming installation instructions.
