If you’ve already installed a Long Travel kit and are now evaluating your next move, this breakdown is written for you.
If you’re brand new to Long Travel and want to start at the smartest possible baseline, you’ll quickly see why so many owners decide to skip the stack of parts entirely and go straight to a unified engineered system instead.
This article is compiled for Type III & IV IFS owners (2003-2024 Toyota/Lexus, more info) looking to run 35″ (315) or larger tires, as your vehicle cannot both fit nor sustain tires this size without upgrades covered in this article. Indeed, 33s bust stock tie rods, 34s bend stock knuckles, and 35s KO stock racks.
For a quick backstory, the idea for this article hit me while tuning my old KLEIN Mantra mountain bike. I bought it new in 1997, and at the time it was cutting-edge as one of the first dual-suspension frames on the market. But as technology evolved over the next 30 years, I kept trying to “modernize” it with one-off upgrades to keep it competitive in amateur XC events.
I added a custom oversized titanium rear cassette years before big cogs existed, shaved my crankset for a micro granny ring, converted to a single front chainring, made multiple anti-chain derailment solutions, built a custom b-link to mount a modern rear derailleur, and even made a cable pull ratio adapter to make a 10spd shifter work with a 1×8 drivetrain.
Every upgrade solved one problem but created two more. The deeper I went, the more money I dumped, and the harder it became to admit the real issue: I wasn’t building a system – I was stacking mismatched solutions onto a drivetrain that was never designed to run them together. I was chasing performance that my patchwork of parts could never deliver as a whole.

If I had simply started with a complete, modern component groupset designed to work as an integrated system instead of stacking individual upgrades that weren’t meant for one another, I wouldn’t have spent years chasing my tail in a spiral of incompatible mods.
And that’s exactly how Long Travel has been for decades. Plenty of companies make kits, but not a single one addresses all of the inevitable challenges that appear the moment you lift and widen a modern Toyota/Lexus:

Drivers have been forced to piece together unrelated helper parts just to work around the limits of what their LT kit was never designed to solve.
That is, until RCLT HD.

What You’d Need to Buy Without RCLT HD
Let’s break it down the way a mechanic, fabricator, and builder will understand – starting with a baseline an owner would realistically set up their rig for:
- 33″ tires → requires a lift + trimmed/chopped body mount + inner tie rod upgrade
- 35″ tires → the above + body mount relocation + knuckle strength upgrades + replacement steering rack
- 37″ tires → all the above + cutting, moving, re-welding control arm pivots + double-shear TRE
- 38″ or taller tires → outside traditional safe standards for IFS
As you get into decent tire sizes, these mods become irreversible, as you must chop off cab mounts & control arm frame pivots as the only way to clear the cab.
And as we’ll show below, these all add-up to an enormous about of labor you don’t think about until you lay it all out: 5 hrs for body mount frame issues, 18 hours for steering issues, up to 6 hrs for knuckle strength issues, and 10 hours for 37″+ tire clearance frame issues. We’re talking a good 38 hours, or 5 business days, and you haven’t even installed a Long Travel Kit yet! Finally, half these mods are irreversible and non-removable, so you’ll have to re-purchase parts and re-pay for duplicate fab work if switching platforms.

- I’ll use an average sales tax rate of 7.52% (source: taxfoundation.org, 12/2025). A few States do charge tax on labor, but for this breakdown we’ll leave it out.
So let’s dive in to what you’d need to buy without RCLT HD. This isn’t just a product comparison – it’s a total cost of ownership and labor reality check.

In order to reliably run 35″ tires, a custom shop narrows a full-size Tundra rack to fit into your mid-size platform by:
- Replacing the Tundra racks’ original full-size bushings with offset pucks to adapt to small mid-size frame mounts
- Narrowing the heat-treated inner rack by cutting off the full-size ITR mounts from both ends
- Welding-in new inserts at the proper mid-size width with matching small mid-size threads
- The full-size Tundra rack has now been converted to mid-size
It’s clever machining, but comes with major drawbacks:
- (1) Despite the Tundra rack body mounting to stock frame holes, it is physically larger and has a different rack centerline
- (2) This means the Inner Tie Rods (ITR) are physically located on a new plane (position) in the frame
- (3) Because knuckle geometry is not updated to match, steering and driving feel are both negatively affected
- Downgrades full-size Tundra tie rod connection to tiny mid-sized threads: 14mm (Tacoma) or 22/24mm (SUV)
- Downgrades rack-to-frame mount hardware, which was 14mm in a Tundra but now just 11mm for mid-size frame
- No center mount provision, No double-shear mount option
- All V8 applications require additional engine mount spacers
- Custom-order only – replacement means thousands in costs and weeks of downtime
- Tundra is a North America-only vehicle, so no Right-Hand Drive option

3. Clevis + Heim-Joint Inner Tie Rod Upgrade Kits
Larger tires increase steering forces. Stock ITRs have only a 14mm diameter at their center and commonly buckle with even just 285 tires.
Aftermarket solution:
- Convert to inner heim joints using a clevis threaded into each end of the rack
- Now it is easy to replace the stock 14mm diameter tie rod with larger machined tubing
It’s a nice idea, but comes with major drawbacks:

4. Knuckle Reinforcement + Aftermarket Double-Shear Add-Ons
So now you can fit 35s and have upgraded your steering. Your knuckles are the next weaklink. In fact, stock knuckles bend permanently from just sliding into curbs with stock tires. So they need a lot of help. You’ve got two options:
– Route A: weld-on spindle gussets and a meager 3/16″ plate-steel double-shear kit that only adds about 25% strength
– Route B: expensive fully fabricated stock-replacement knuckles + the same double-shear add-on kit
Even with both options:
- Retains light-duty mid-size steering & suspension geometry
- Knuckle geometry only meant for stock ride height
- The more you lift, the less likely to align suspension
- Setting static ride height high, results in large bump steer and camber change through suspension cycle
- Stock mid-size steering geometry at the knuckle is incorrect for an oversized full-size steering rack
- Incorrect geometry → less turning power → larger upstream stress + loads → more frequent failures
- Incorrect geometry → bump steer → excessive cross-caster → increased brake-dive → cornering instability
- Single-shear vertical ball joints top & bottom with no added degree of safety
- Ball-joint bind still limits travel (vertical design issues)
- Double-shear total material thickness is only 0.89″ (RCLT HD is 1.30″)

5. LCA Pivot Kit (+1″ Forward)
Because BMR kits only allow room for 35s, an additional product is needed for more clearance whereby you chop off all your stock LCA frame mounts and weld on new brackets that move your suspension forward up to one inch. Now you can fit up to +2″ larger diameter tires.
This is also a really clever solution, however:
- This step alone requires nearly half the total number of hours to install as one complete RCLT HD
- Permanently modifies frame beyond return
- Uses proprietary alignment hardware requiring special instructions to align vehicle
- Clearance penalty: ~2″ lost under the center of front end (not what you want with IFS)
- No other skid plates fit, so proprietary skid is mandatory
- Not compatible with aftermarket Lower Control Arm Frame Brace or Cam Tab Kits (more info).
- If you already have these mods installed, they get thrown in the trash.

Long Travel control arms provide increased stability, suspension travel, and capacity to carry more weight and eat up larger bumps.

Lastly, there are a few specialty LT kits that move the knuckle forward +1″, however, these kits are even worse because they do not also move the steering system forward with it – But RCLT HD does. In fact, we mount the MarRack 50mm (1.97″) forward, and on top of this we alter our knuckle steering geometry to match our new +2″ forward knuckle placement.
There is simply no comparison to RCLT HD.
But the real penalty isn’t your current setup – it’s the next 5 figures you’re about to trap into sub-par non-integrated separate irreversible modifications.
