This drop-in open differential complete third member is hand-built in-house with Marlin’s proprietary gear setup method for maximum longevity, strength, and quiet operation. This is a great option if you need a refresh or are looking to change the gearing but don’t need the added complexity or cost of a locker. In such case, we recommend 4.88:1 gears for 33″ tires and 5.29:1 for 35″ or larger, however this varies based on how many hills you climb (you might want to run a lower ratio if you drive many hills) or how much bottom-end torque your engine has (if you have a torquer camshaft, then run a higher ratio for improved highway MPG).
This complete Toyota third member includes:
- High Quality Yukon Ring & Pinion gears with matching Master Install Setup Kit
- All new KOYO/Timken Japanese bearings
- Marlin Crawler EcoSeal™ HD Pinion Seal
- Solid Pinion Spacer and Heavy-Duty Flange
- Assembled with precision using Marlin’s original differential setup method, trusted since the 1970s
Ready to drop in — just add gear oil.
⚠️ Break-In Procedure Required:
Please follow our Ring & Pinion break-in steps to ensure maximum gear life. Please see our Differential Break-In Procedure for details.
Built the Marlin Way – Since the 1970s
We don’t follow manuals. We follow Marlin. Our proprietary gear setup method — developed in the 1970s and handed down only to our master builders — is unlike anything else in the industry. Buying from us promises a more precise gear mesh pattern, resulting in a quieter, stronger, and longer-lasting differential. Proven on the trail and trusted for daily driving by tens of thousands of Toyota/Lexus owners, weekend wheelers, and professional race teams — including top of class and podium finishes at King of the Hammers, Baja 1000, World Extreme Rock Crawling Championship Series, and three consecutive Formula Toyota national titles.
✅ Industry-leading reliability record over a vast install base
✅ Built in-house by technicians who’ve been with us since the early 2000s
✅ Proven to outlast traditional setup methods
This is more than a build — it’s the original, still done the right way.

I put this carrier in my 88 toyota pickup 4×4 last year to replace a sloppy, howling mess. It had over 280,000 miles on it, this new one is tight, an quiet. Now all I here is my mud tires singing a song. Thanks for a great turnkey piece for my old truck.
