Built for the Demands of RCLT HD
When it comes to pushing Toyota IFS beyond its original limits, axle strength becomes everything.
That’s why the overwhelming majority of RCLT HD customers choose RCV Ultimate IFS CV Axles. These are not ordinary upgraded CV shafts. They are purpose-built, race-proven axle assemblies engineered to survive the abuse that destroys conventional Toyota axles.
From ULTRA4 competition and King of the Hammers to hard trail wheeling on 42″ tires, RCV Ultimate Axles have repeatedly proven themselves in the harshest environments imaginable. For customers building serious long-travel Toyota and Lexus platforms, they have become the benchmark for maximum IFS axle strength and reliability. Case in point, we have never seen nor heard of one breaking and they are protected by RCV’s “No Questions Asked” Lifetime Warranty against breakage.
At the core of every Ultimate IFS Axle is RCV’s proprietary 300M alloy technology, delivering dramatically greater torsional strength and fatigue resistance than traditional chromoly axle shafts. The center bars feature massive 35-spline 300M construction, while the CV joints utilize oversized internals designed specifically for extreme-angle, high-load operation.
The inboard double-offset CV joint uses huge 1-inch precision balls with 300M internal components to maintain smooth operation and durability at long-travel suspension angles. Outboard joints are based on RCV’s proven Dana 60 architecture and optimized using a combination of 4340 and 300M materials for maximum strength where it matters most.
RCV’s proprietary high-performance moly grease (pre-packed) helps control heat buildup under sustained load and high-speed use, while the black oxide finish provides corrosion protection and long-term durability.
Most importantly: these axles are not theoretical upgrades. They have been extensively tested in real-world RCLT HD applications and are specifically designed to match the geometry and travel characteristics of our +2.75” RCLT HD Long Travel System.
The Origin of +2.75″ Long Travel
For nearly two decades, Toyota long-travel IFS systems generally existed in two widths: +2.00″ and +3.50″.
The narrower +2.00″ systems offered improved suspension performance while keeping overall vehicle width relatively manageable. The wider +3.50″ systems allowed for greater travel potential, but often pushed tire width far enough outward that many owners resorted to fiberglass fenders and significantly wider body coverage.
During the development of RCLT HD, we set out to engineer something different: a system that combined the more practical overall width of a mid-travel setup with suspension performance capable of surpassing traditional +3.50″ kits.
The result was the industry’s first +2.75″ Toyota long-travel platform, introduced by Marlin Crawler in 2018.
By combining our proprietary fabricated knuckles and horizontal double-shear ball joint architecture with carefully optimized suspension geometry, RCLT HD was able to achieve articulation and steering performance beyond what conventional long-travel systems using factory-style vertical ball joints could deliver – without the excessive overall width commonly associated with wider kits.
The +2.75″ platform quickly became the most popular RCLT HD configuration because it delivers an ideal balance of stability, articulation, steering performance, tire clearance, and overall vehicle proportions.
Our own RCLT HD development vehicles and customer builds have subjected these axles to years of abuse on large tires, difficult rock crawling terrain, desert racing conditions, and high-angle long-travel operation with outstanding reliability. When the rest of the suspension system is engineered to eliminate weak points, the axle becomes one of the most critical links in the drivetrain, and RCV has consistently delivered.
If you’re building an IFS Toyota or Lexus intended to handle serious tire size, aggressive wheeling, high horsepower, or race-level abuse while retaining the smoothness and control advantages of independent suspension, this is the axle setup we trust.
